Agafay

The Agafay Desert, also known as the “Stone Desert” or “Desert of Stones,” is a unique rocky desert landscape located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Marrakech, Morocco. Unlike the Sahara Desert with its vast sand dunes, Agafay is a “reg” (stone desert) characterized by rolling rocky hills, stone plains, and a lunar-like landscape. The desert covers several hundred hectares on a High Atlas plateau.

History

The Agafay Desert’s unique geology is the result of its history as a prehistoric lake that dried up thousands of years ago. The region has been important to local Berber communities for centuries, who have inhabited and utilized this rocky landscape. Erosion and time have shaped the current terrain into the distinctive stone desert visible today.
