Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate is a city located in southern Morocco, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Sahara” or the “Door of the Desert.” Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,160 meters (3,800 feet) on the southern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, it serves as the capital of the Drâa-Tafilalet region. The city lies at the crossroads of several historic caravan routes and is a strategic hub for travelers heading to the Sahara Desert, the Dades Valley, or the Todra Gorge.

History

Ouarzazate was historically a small settlement used by Berber tribes as a resting point for caravans crossing the Atlas Mountains. Its strategic location made it an important stop along trans-Saharan trade routes. In 1928, during the French colonial period, the city was developed as a military outpost and administrative center. The iconic Kasbah Taourirt, built by the Glaoui family in the 19th century, stands as a testament to the city’s historical significance and architectural heritage.
