Fes

Fes (also spelled Fez) is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities and the country’s spiritual and cultural capital. Located in north-central Morocco at the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains, Fes is the fifth-largest city in the nation and the capital of the Fès-Meknès administrative region. The city is renowned for preserving one of the world’s largest and best-preserved medieval medinas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers an immersive journey into Morocco’s rich historical heritage.

History

Founded in 789 CE by Idris I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty, Fes is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The city flourished under successive dynasties—the Idrisids, Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Saadians—each contributing to its architectural and intellectual legacy. During the Marinid era (13th–15th centuries), Fes reached its golden age as a center of learning, commerce, and craftsmanship. The University of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 CE by Fatima al-Fihri, is recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the oldest existing, continually operating educational institution in the world. Fes remained Morocco’s capital until 1912, when the French protectorate shifted administrative functions to Rabat.

Culture

Fes is widely regarded as the cultural and religious heart of Morocco. The city is a guardian of traditional Islamic scholarship, Andalusian music, and artisanal excellence. Its medina remains a living community where daily life unfolds much as it has for centuries, with residents preserving customs, dialects, and crafts passed down through generations. Fassi culture is distinguished by its refined etiquette, sophisticated cuisine, and deep appreciation for art and learning. The city hosts numerous cultural festivals, including the prestigious Fes Festival of World Sacred Music, which brings together artists and spiritual traditions from around the globe.

Climate

Fes experiences a Mediterranean climate with continental influences. Summers are hot and dry, with daytime temperatures often reaching 35-40°C (95-104°F), while winters are cool and rainy, with daytime highs of 15-18°C (59-64°F) and occasional nighttime lows near freezing. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the most pleasant weather for exploration, with mild temperatures and blooming landscapes. Rainfall is concentrated between November and March.

Modern Fes

Today, Fes harmoniously blends its ancient heritage with contemporary development. While the medina preserves its medieval character, the Ville Nouvelle (new city) features modern amenities, universities, and administrative buildings. The city is a major center for education, craftsmanship, and religious scholarship, attracting students, artisans, and pilgrims from across the Muslim world. Conservation efforts by UNESCO and Moroccan authorities aim to protect the medina’s architectural integrity while improving infrastructure and living conditions for residents. For travelers, Fes offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience authentic Moroccan culture, history, and hospitality—making it an essential destination for those seeking to understand the soul of Morocco.
