Itinerary

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Cedar Forest – Middle Atlas Mountains – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Desert

Around 8:00 AM, our team will pick you up at your accommodation in Fes. Our first stop is Ifrane, known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” with its clean streets and alpine architecture. From here, we drive to the Cedar forests of Azrou to see the famous Barbary macaques. The next stop is Midelt, a town known for minerals and apples, lying between the High and Middle Atlas mountains, where we will stop for lunch. We then continue through the Tizi N’Tlghamt pass to Errachidia, stopping for panoramic views of the Ziz Valley, the land of dates. We drive through Erfoud to reach Merzouga. Your camel guide awaits for a 1-hour and 20-minute trek into the dunes, stopping for an incredible sunset. Arrive at the well-equipped camp for Moroccan tea, a delicious dinner, and an evening of Berber and African music around the campfire.

Day 2: Full Day To Explore Merzouga Desert

Start your day early to enjoy the stunning sunrise over the vast Sahara Desert. After breakfast at the camp, embark on an exciting 4×4 adventure across dramatic sand dunes and diverse desert landscapes. You will pass through small oases and rugged terrain, stopping to visit traditional Berber communities living near the Algerian border. Share tea with the locals, learn about their ancient way of life, and see their traditional crafts. Next, head to Dar Gnaoua to meet the Gnaoua people, descendants of sub-Saharan traders, and experience their vibrant spiritual music and dance. Continue exploring the towering Erg Chebbi dunes and walk through lush palm groves that provide a refreshing contrast to the arid desert. Return to your camp for desert activities like sandboarding, watch the sunset, and enjoy a relaxing dinner under the stars.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Alnif – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou Kasbah – Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

Depart for the bustling Rissani market, an excellent spot to experience authentic Moroccan culture and buy local spices. Drive through Alnif, known for its unique rock formations and fossils, then pass through the Draa Valley, known for its lush palm groves, kasbahs, and picturesque Berber villages. Upon arrival in Ouarzazate, the “gateway to the desert,” you will visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. FAQs

Is it possible to do Fes to Marrakech via the desert in only 3 days?
Yes, it is a very popular route, but it requires a lot of driving. By spending two nights in the Merzouga desert camp, you maximize your Sahara experience without having to pack up and drive to a new hotel on the second day.

Why do we spend two nights in the desert instead of driving straight to Ouarzazate?
Spending two nights allows you to enjoy a dedicated full-day 4×4 excursion on Day 2. Instead of rushing south, you get to visit nomadic families, explore the Erg Chebbi dunes, and experience Gnawa music in Khamlia.

Will we have time to visit Ait Benhaddou on the last day?
Yes, the drive from Merzouga to Marrakech on Day 3 goes directly through Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou. You will have time to explore the Kasbah and grab lunch before crossing the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech.

Can we fly out of Marrakech on the evening of Day 3?
You will arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening (around 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM). If you book a flight departing after 8:00 PM, we can drop you off directly at the Marrakech airport.
