Begin by crossing the majestic High Atlas Mountains, visit the iconic Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, and explore the scenic Dades Valley and dramatic Toudgha Gorges before reaching Merzouga. Spend a full day immersed in the heart of the Sahara Desert, where you’ll enjoy a camel ride across the golden dunes and spend the night under the stars in a traditional desert camp. On your return journey, pass through Rissani, Nkob, and the lush Draa Valley, with time to explore Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Sahara, before crossing the Atlas Mountains once more to arrive back in Marrakech. This journey offers a rich blend of Moroccan culture, diverse natural landscapes, and unforgettable desert experiences.
Around 7:00 AM, our team will meet you at your accommodation in Marrakech to begin your journey through the breathtaking southeastern landscapes of Morocco. Your first stop is the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest road in Morocco. You will enjoy panoramic views and a short break for photos, observing traditional Berber villages built into the hillsides. Continue to the famous Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and filming location for movies like Gladiator. After exploring this historic village, head to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” with an optional visit to the film studios. Journey through the Rose Valley and Dades Gorges, stopping for lunch in Boumalne Dades. After lunch, visit the stunning Todra Gorges near Tinghir, a favorite among climbers and nomadic families. Pass through Erfoud, famous for fossils and fresh dates, before reaching the Merzouga Desert in the early evening. Your camel guide will be waiting to take you on a 1-hour and 20-minute camel ride across the golden dunes, including a stop for an unforgettable sunset atop the dunes. Arrive at your luxury desert camp, where you will be welcomed with traditional Moroccan tea and cookies. After a delicious dinner, gather around the campfire and enjoy an evening of Berber and African music under the stars.
Overnight stay in a luxury desert camp.
Wake early to witness a magical sunrise over the Sahara Desert, as the dunes transform into glowing waves of gold and orange. Return to camp for a hearty breakfast, then begin an exhilarating 4×4 desert adventure. Drive through dramatic dunes, rugged terrain, and hidden oases. Along the way, visit Berber communities who live traditionally in tents made of camel hair, practicing crafts like pottery and weaving. Experience their hospitality and enjoy a cup of Saharan tea. Continue to Dar Gnaoua, home of the Gnaoua people, descendants of sub-Saharan traders. Learn about their vibrant musical traditions and enjoy the distinctive rhythms of the guembri and qraqeb during a local performance. Explore the majestic Erg Chebbi Dunes, the highest in Morocco, offering panoramic desert views and peaceful palm groves. In the evening, return to camp for optional activities like sandboarding and watching the sunset over the dunes, followed by a traditional Moroccan dinner. Relax by the campfire with mint tea and Berber music, enjoying your final night in the Sahara.
Overnight stay in a luxury desert camp.
Wake early once again for a breathtaking sunrise in the dunes, followed by a desert breakfast. Return to Merzouga village either by camel or 4×4 vehicle, as you prefer, and begin the journey back. Visit Rissani, known for its ancient walls, traditional souks, and historical significance as the origin of the Alaouite dynasty. Explore the local market where traditional garments, spices, and herbs are sold. Head towards Nkob, a charming Berber village, where you will stop for lunch. Continue through the scenic Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley, passing through multiple Berber villages and date palm oases. Return to Ouarzazate, where you will have the chance to visit the Atlas Film Studios and revisit the Ait Benhaddou Kasbah if you missed it on Day 1. Drive back to Marrakech via the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass, enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery along the way. Arrive in Marrakech around sunset, where we will drop you off at your accommodation.
Why does this tour spend two nights in the Merzouga desert instead of one?
Spending two nights allows for a full-day 4×4 excursion on Day 2. Instead of rushing back the next morning, you get to explore hidden oases, meet nomadic families, and experience Gnaoua culture without being confined to a vehicle all day.
Is the return route to Marrakech different from the drive to the desert?
Yes, to make the journey more interesting, the return trip bypasses the Dades Valley and takes you through the Ziz Valley, the historic town of Rissani, the scenic route via Nkob, and through the lush Draa Valley before hitting Ouarzazate.
What will we see during the 4×4 excursion on Day 2?
You will visit local Berber nomads in their traditional camel-hair tents, explore the palm groves of Erg Chebbi, visit the village of the Gnaoua people to listen to their unique spiritual music, and drive to panoramic viewpoints of the highest dunes in Morocco.
Can we do the camel trek on both days?
Yes, you will take a sunset camel trek on Day 1 when you arrive, and on Day 3, you have the option to return to the village by camel at sunrise, or simply take the 4×4 back if you prefer to rest.
